Setting up a new iPad can be a simple process, whether it’s your first ever iPad or if you’re replacing an old one. When setting up a new iPad, you need to consider whether you want to replace the old one entirely, set up the new one as a separate device or have both devices set up identically. Sign in to the new iPad with your Apple ID and backup your old iPad to either a Mac or iCloud. If you choose to back up to a Mac, everything on your old iPad, including apps and media, will be backed up. On the other hand, backing up to iCloud will only store your settings, not the content.
If you choose to set up the new iPad using Quick Start, place your new iPad next to your old one and follow the on-screen instructions. Enter your Apple ID and password on the new iPad, go through the setup steps, and restore all your apps. Once all your apps are restored, you can choose to remove any that you don’t want on the new iPad, or add any new ones from the App Store. If you decide to keep the old iPad, the two devices can work together perfectly. However, if you’re getting rid of the old iPad, make sure to back it up again, sign out of your iCloud and Apple ID, and erase all content and settings. This will return the old iPad to its out-of-the-box state for someone else to set it up as their own.
